A conversation by the desk.

Brief

Design a conversation between a human user and a machine.

Research Method

AEIOU & Speed Dating

Brainstorm

At first, we wanted to focus on blind people to show a conversation of blind people and the world. We were thinking of helping blind people to walk without other people`s company.

Research

Through online research, we found that blind people sometimes do not like to travel with others. They think that being accompanied by someone all day makes them feel the loss of independence. Because of this kind of mentality, some blind people are more willing to choose guide dogs. But guide dogs have many limitations. For example, the time and money costs of training dogs are high, the life span of dogs is limited, and there are many unstable factors in dogs. If a machine is used to guide blindness, it can provide a lot of conveniences and these problems can be solved.

We use storyboards to test our idea. Here are storyboards that I drew.

Interim Outcome

After discussion, we have initially designed a voice-guided blind product that users can take with them to go out alone, without the company of others.

It consists of a camera, headphones and a microphone.

Cameras can detect road conditions and oncoming people and recognize what is going on in front. The headset can pass information to the user in the form of voice, tell the user the situation in front and the road conditions, and give the user a certain reminder.

After tutorial

After the tutorial, we find that it`s hard to work on our old idea since it`s hard to find any blind people to do our field research. By the suggestion of the instructor, we changed the topic and went to the gym to investigate and see anything new could be found.

Research

  • AEIOU

We stayed in the gym next to LCC for half an hour and recorded a lot of people`s behaviours in the gym. Then each of us analyzed the result of our observation.

AEIOU represent activities, environments, interactions, objects and users. Each of us summarized these factors in our observations and made a diagram. The first picture is my analysis.

  • Speed Dating

Then we draw a lot of storyboards to compare multiple concepts and how can users interact with the product.

We draw different scenarios and solutions to the problems in quick time to explore future design. Here are the storyboards I drew.

Definition

After drawing storyboards, we make an agreement on correcting people`s posture. We found that many people in the gym were not in the correct posture. In fact, incorrect sitting posture is more common. Therefore, we reached a consensus to design for people with incorrect sitting postures. We did a lot of observation in the library and did some online research. And we find that people will change their posture if they know they are in a bad posture.

So focus on how to solve this problem. Remind people of their bad posture.

Plans

We have two plans.

First one is a small robot that can be put on a desk.

It will imitate your humpback posture to remind you that your posture is incorrect.

When you are in a bad posture, the robot will head down.

When you correct your posture, the robot will head up.

The second one is a sticker you can put at the back of your neck.

When you are in a bad posture, the sticker will shake several times to remind you.

When you change your posture, the sticker will stop shaking.

Prototype

I made a prototype to show our product to the class. The robot will change facial expressions when people`s posture changed.

Final Product

We made our final product by blue clay and use it in the video.
