Explore the connection between Satellite and Human Emotion.

Desktop Research

So we did desktop research to understand the connection between satellite superpower, human experience and emotion. Satellite powers are really impacting our daily life and we are interested in those satellite technologies that can help people build an emotional connection with others in a different scenario, for example, when people feel homesick, these satellite power enable people to relieve sadness.

The scenario of Homesick seems really close to personal emotions and We try to understand what causes people to feel homesick. We found lots of interesting design opportunity points from our user interview and storytelling part, we let people tell us a story that exactly links to homesickness and we found homesickness is always connecting to a physical location, people and emotional feeling.

Super Power of Satellite

Help people know more information about their hometown.

  • Provide people with opportunities to connect with others.

  • Relieve homesick feeling.

Insights

  • The communication functions provided by satellite, such as satellite TV, radio, etc., have helped the homesick people to establish the "Emotional Outlet"

  • Physical place/space is a very important element for people who are homesick.

  • Allowing people who are homesick to feel geographic proximity can help relieve their homesickness

  • Specific sounds can help with nostalgia.

Ideation

Emotion Visualization

This night map from the Nasa, shown how the night would be like in different cities in a global scale.

On the one hand, the lightmap directly reflects the local level of industrialization and urbanization; on the other hand, it can also partially reflect the concentration of the world's population.

The light of the city reveals the number of people. According to a recent Gallup World Poll, 1.1 billion people, or one-quarter of the earth’s adults, want to move temporarily to another country in the hope of finding more profitable work. An additional 630 million people would like to move abroad permanently.

Snarkitecture filled a gallery in Manhattan with 168 spherical white lamps that light up blue when touched. The installation is called Sway, 2019 https://www.collater.al/en/snarkitecture-installation/

Lights and light to some extent played a companionship role in human society. When there are people from the same place, the lights will be brighter(Applied technology: satellite positioning / real-time information dissemination)

Real-time Scenes

  • PLAN A: Real-Time sound of Hometown

Sound can touch people's senses, and it reminds people of many scenes in their minds. There are many voices in the city, such as the sound of children playing, the noise of the noisy food market and so on. We hope to create an immersive experience by stimulating hearing, allowing users to remotely hear the sound of their hometown and feel like they are at home.

Satellite technology: the bus can report the station in real-time through the satellite positioning technology. Therefore, we would like to build a sound collection station on the bus through this technology and collect the sounds of the city while the bus is driving.

Users can search for Radio signals in foreign cities to listen to the real-time sound of the hometown city and the sound of the bus stop and let the sound warm their hearts.

  • PLAN B: Real-Time Scenes from Hometown

People who are in a foreign country can not witness the changes in their hometowns. We want to help users see the changes in their hometowns through satellites.

The satellite has a remote sensing function. It can record real-time 3D scenes of a location, so the changes in the location over time can be seen. We plan to design a smart satellite photo album to process the photos taken by the user in his hometown, and the user can see the real-time changes in his hometown.

How it works:When the user uploads the photo to the smart photo album, the person in the photo will be separated from the background. The background behind will be removed. And the background will change based on the GPS information. It will update the changes in the hometown in real-time.
