In order to help users look back at the wonderful moments in the mobile phone photo album, it is necessary to conduct research in a variety of ways to understand how users record memories and how do people look back to the past. The design methods that I used to investigate the topic are AEIOU, observations and interviews. I used these methods to further understand the user’s interactions with photos.

AEIOU

In order to understand how people use mobile phones to record their lives, my friend and I embarked on a short trip.

During the trip, I used AEIOU to record the habits of my friend recording our trip. There are many scenes that we want to record during the trip, such as, different scenic spots, tasting delicious food, and encountering interesting wonders, happy moments, local streetscapes, etc. She took pictures and did video recordings with mobile phones to record those moments. After the trip, the videos and photos are sent to social media as a record of the journey.

Through this design method, a common process of recording life was discovered. First, take photos and videos with mobile phones to record the moments in different scenes, then organize the photos, edit the text records and upload them to social media.

Observation

The aim of using this method is to observe how other people take photos and how do people sorting their album. I have made several observations of varying degrees.

# Observation 1

First, I observed my friend’s daily shooting methods and social media posting methods. Flora is a girl who likes to take photos and record her life. She often takes some photos when she hangs out with her friends. However, due to previous experience, taking too many photos will quickly fill up the phone's memory. Therefore, after taking a few photos, Xiaoyue will quickly select the good-looking photos and delete the other photos to organise her album in a concise way. In this way, the photos on her phone will be much streamlined, saving a lot of memory. Regarding posting on social media, she doesn't often share her daily routines on social media, instead, she will post a periodic share every so often, sharing beautiful photos of the recent period.

# Observation 2

Then, I completed another observation in a popular restaurant, and most of the people who came to visit the restaurant came because of its popularity. I planned to observe how people take photos and record the meal. I observed that people take photos of different subjects. People take photos of many things, such as stores, food etc. Some took selfies, and some ask others to help take a group photo. I noticed that some people would check whether they are satisfied with the photos after they just took one. They also care about shooting angles. Sometimes, people changed the angle to take pictures of the food for a long time after the food is on the table, and then checked the photo repeatedly. Others enjoyed the food directly after taking the picture. There were also people waiting for their partners to take photos before eating, and they will not take the initiative to take photos.

# Observation 3

What’s more, I collected social media content from a large number of users and summarized some factors. The user's social media content has many different scenarios depending on the event. Users will include different information in their post, mainly including people, time, location, what they did, and their mood and thoughts. Not all expressions will contain these factors. For example, some posts only describe the mood and do not talk about the circumstances surrounding the matter.
